The good news is that solid aluminum cladding behaves very differently from composite systems: aluminum is non-combustible and does not contribute fuel to a fire. The honest answer: it depends on the panel construction.

Aluminum metal itself is non-combustible. It melts at around 660°C, but it does not burn and it does not release flammable gases. A panel made from solid aluminum throughout will not propagate flame on its surface or through its core.

However, not every product marketed as "aluminum cladding" is solid metal. Aluminum composite panels (ACP) consist of two thin aluminum skins bonded to a polyethylene (PE) or mineral-filled core. It is the core — not the aluminum — that determines fire behaviour. PE-cored ACP can melt, drip and contribute to rapid flame spread in a façade fire. Mineral-cored ACP is safer, but still relies on adhesive layers and delamination risk.

What Is an A2 Fire Rating?

Under the European classification system EN 13501-1, façade materials are rated from A1 (non-combustible) down to F (highly combustible). For tall buildings, many codes now require materials classified as A2-s1,d0 or better.

  • s1 — very low smoke production.
  • d0 — no flaming droplets or particles.
